Hi All:
It is getting close to the holiday season. That means we will be busier than usual. Our club is VERY active and does a great deal for the communities of Alachua and High Springs. So to keep you apprised of future events, here goes: Oct. 19th evening meeting at Brown’s; No meeting Oct. 20th; There will be a Harvest Party for the kids in the Day Care Center on Oct. 28th; November 11th a party for our veterans at the Mayflower facility. We’ll be cooking hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. Additionally, the club is collecting toiletries for the veterans there: bar soap, shampoo, shave cream, tooth paste and the like; Nov. 19th we will hold another party at the Merrillwood subdivision in Alachua. The kids really enjoyed themselves at the last one.
For Thanksgiving the club is preparing food baskets for the needy in the two cities. We intend on distributing 8 in each city. Mary Jane will get the list of needed items to us very soon so that you can sign up to bring some things. If you know of deserving families (they do not have to have young children) let me know.
We will need to pressure clean and paint the storage building and breezeway at the day care center. That should bring to a close our major project to save the center from condemnation. We should all be proud of what our club has accomplished. BTW The new stove, hood and fire suppression system should be done before next week.
Another thing our club has decided is to purchase a trailer to be used for the collection and distribution of food to the poor in Alachua and High Springs. There are many entities involved in this ongoing endeavor, but it is run through Gainesville Harvest. The trailer is to be picked up next week and, after the addition of Kiwanis signs will be delivered very soon to Hal Brady in Alachua.
Another ongoing project of the club is the tutoring in reading provided at Alachua Elementary. This year there are a lot more kids involved. It is not open to 3rd through 5th graders. So more tutors are needed. It takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays between approximately 1:30 and 3 PM. If you can assist, let Cassandra or Sue know.
I hope to see you at a meeting very soon.
Tom Weller
